Best Books For Autumn

By Joe Smith

Summer is officially over – long days and shimmering sunshine a thing of the past. So, how do we keep the autumn blues away? With a good book, of course. That’s why we’ve gathered seven books we’ll be reading as the leaves turn brown and we’re snuggled up on the sofa with a hot chocolate in hand.

Leonard and Hungry Paul by Rónán Hession

A heartwarming tale centred around two best friends, this book is nothing short of a really lovely read. It’ll make you laugh, cry, and a smile will stay on your face throughout. It’s one you’ll want to start again as soon as you’ve finished.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

What would happen if you simply stayed indoors for an entire year? Well, if you don’t have the time to test this yourself, just give this novel a read. It took BookTok by storm a few years ago, and it continues to captivate readers today. Give it a go before the film comes out next year; it’ll keep you captivated from start to finish.

Dracula by Bram Stoker

What’s autumn without a spooky story or two? So why not begin with one of the best? Bram Stoker’s legendary tale centres around one of literature’s most heinous villains, while protagonist Jonathan Harker tries to escape his dastardly clutches. Does he succeed? You’ll have to read it to find out.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

There’s no better season for a classic than autumn, especially when it’s a gothic gem like Wuthering Heights. Written by Emily Brontë, this novel is set on the windy West Yorkshire moors and heavily explores themes of gothic and romanticism. It’s a gruelling but beautiful read, and definitely one to tick off your reading list this autumn.

The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson

A novel rife with nostalgia, The Saturday Night Ghost Club takes place in the ’80s in Niagara Falls. It’s an instant coming-of-age classic that focuses on human hauntings as well as spectral ones. It’s the perfect page-turner if you fancy feeling a little spooky this autumn.

London in autumn. The perfect setting to read autumn books.
