Compact Knits: What Are They and What Makes Them So Good?

By Emily Weatherill

If you’ve browsed our latest collection, Elysium, you might have noticed a few pieces made from a new knit material – a lighter and more tightly spun take on the classic chunky wool knit.

Named Compact Yarn, this material goes through a process of – you guessed it – compact spinning to ensure a smoother and more refined finish than traditional knits. Our Adaline Tees even offer a jersey-like texture thanks to their tight and compact knit.

How Does Compact Spinning Work?

The process involves ring spinning plus fibre compacting, where yarn is fed through a compacting device which stretches out and compresses the fibres under pressure. This achieves a greater density of fabric so that when the material is fed into the ring spinner, it creates a more even and less hairy finish.

What Are The Benefits of a Compact Knit?

Most of the benefits of a compact knit are from the removal of the less desirable traits of traditional wool knits. You’ll find compact knits to be less hairy – meaning fewer rolls with the lint roller – and also stronger and more durable. This higher tenacity is thanks to the density that can be achieved through compressing the fibres of compact knits. So, you can rest assured you’ll remain snag-free after a weekend of lounging in our Adaline Tee and matching Apartment Pants

But our favourite quality that comes from a compact knit? The lightweight finish. Although the material works to keep you warm and cosy amid autumnal breezes, it’s also light enough to wear on slightly warmer days. That’s the recipe for the perfect transitional piece – if we do say so ourselves.

Our Compact Knits

Launching as part of our September collection, the Adaline Tee and Apartment Pant co-ord is expertly made using a compact knit in our family-run studios in Europe. This set features a quarter-length sleeve top with a crew neckline and a lightly ribbed texture for a casual finish. The trousers are cut to a wide-leg fit that’s perfect for lounging. You can wear this easy, relaxed duo together or as separates and their luxe texture can even be dressed up for a more sophisticated look.
