Reinvention with Style: Morag Atkinson on Fashion, Confidence and Life After Retirement

By Emily Weatherill

When Morag Atkinson retired from her job in the NHS, life didn’t slow down – instead, she stepped into a whole new (albeit unexpected) role: fashion influencer.

Morag or Mogzee as her Instagram handle fondly names her, is a vibrant force of nature. And if you haven’t explored her feed before, we’ll tell you that it’s a colourful blend of classic tailoring, playful textures, and elegant styling that feels effortless yet distinctly her own.

Taking The Leap Into Social Media

Before her life on Instagram, Morag worked as an Occupational Therapist and later moved into NHS management where she retired four years ago. But it was always clothing that held her heart. “I’ve always loved style, more than fashion, really,” Morag told us. “Even before social media, I was constantly planning outfits, mixing fabrics, thinking about how things feel and look.”

When I asked her what made her take the leap and start posting her outfits on social media, she told me that it wasn’t without a little encouragement from friends.

“They kept telling me I should be sharing my outfits online because people were always commenting on my style,” she recalls. “So I gave it a go. I had no idea what a hashtag was at the time!”

A Loving Community

Despite not having a background in digital content, her daily outfit posts quickly gained traction. “The engagement was there right from the beginning,” she says. “I think people appreciated the honesty in what I shared. I wasn’t trying to be anyone else, I was just myself.”

And people responded. Her Instagram following grew steadily, and with it, a loyal and warm community. “They’re such a lovely group,” she says. “A real mix of ages and backgrounds. But I think I attract people who care about quality over quantity. Not fast fashion shoppers, but considered dressers.”

Morag’s Personal Style

So, how does she approach getting dressed each day?

“Comfort is always key,” she says matter-of-factly. “But I also love to feel a bit different – maybe even flamboyant. I like to stand out in a subtle way, with details or colour or texture. I want my clothes to feel like me.”

Since diving into the world of social media, Morag has found herself more open than ever to experimenting with fashion. “It’s been incredible, discovering new brands and styles. I have quite an eclectic taste, so Instagram has been like a candy store. There’s so much to explore.”

One Piece of Advice

I asked what advice she’d give to other women, particularly those who have also retired, who might want to share their style online but feel hesitant.

“Do it!” she laughed. “You gain confidence as you start connecting with like-minded folk. It’s such a confidence boost to realise there’s a whole community out there who are just like you.”

And then, there are the unexpected opportunities. “There have been so many highlights. Walking in a professional catwalk show, me among professional models, attending Wimbledon… gosh the list goes on!”

Timeless Fashion

But one brand Morag keeps returning to is Saint + Sofia. “I just love the quality. The pieces are always so well made – and while they’re on trend, they don’t follow the crowd. There’s something different about them. I don’t think there’s been anything I haven’t loved styling.”

Morag’s story is a beautiful reminder that great style truly has no age limit. Whether she’s mixing textures, discovering new silhouettes, or simply showing up as herself, Morag embodies confidence, curiosity, and joy in dressing.
